Obesity epidemic

The scale of the obesity epidemic is such that the
world needs a global pact on the best ways to tackle it. At present, according to Professor Phillip James, an expert on nutrition, obese children outnumber the malnourished by two to one. This worldwide weight gain is causing a marked rise in some diseases such as type two diabetes.

According to Professor James, there is no point in blaming individuals for being overweight – we need real political leadership to change the environment that is making the world fat. The fat content of food needs to be labelled clearly, advertisers must be prevented from targeting children and governments must encourage people to get out of their cars.

Wi-fi

Wi-fi is an abbreviation of Wireless fidelity. This interesting usage shows the return of a word that everybody thought had gone completely out of date – ‘wireless’. I mean, ‘wireless’ was around when wireless was invented, but it was quickly replaced by ‘radio’. Suddenly it came back in again with this Internet connection. Nowadays it’s used for all sorts of applications – TV remotes can be talked about as wireless control, mobile phones are sometimes referred to as wireless, and so on and so forth.

The opposite of ‘wireless’ is ‘wired’ – that is, using wires to carry the signal as in cable television. Informally, we can also say that people are ‘wired up’ when they are fully aware of what is happening in their surroundings.

Brazil's middle-class boom

With the World Cup in 2014, the Olympics two years later and large discoveries of oil boosting the economy, Brazilians could be excused for looking at the world through rose-tinted glasses.

The world’s party country – home to samba dance and Carnival – is enjoying an economic cocktail of low unemployment and easy consumer credit, propelling many Brazilians into the country’s burgeoning middle class.

In the last decade, effective anti-poverty policies such as “Bolsa Família”, introduced by former President Lula and carried on by the current President Dilma Rousseff, have helped transform Brazil’s workforce and increase the minimum wage.

“Brazil used to be one of the most unequal countries in the world,” said Naercio Menezes Filho, professor of economics business school, Insper.
