a. Drug/Alcohol Abuse:

Abuso de drogas/álcool: 

There was a time in cinematic history where virtually every actor/actress was portrayed on screen with a cigarette in hand. Smoking, it was implied, was cool. As a result everyone was doing it, including young people. As awareness to the danger of smoking increased, "cool" images of smoking disappeared. Unfortunately, the same can’t be said about drugs and alcohol. These vices are staples in everyday media. Simply, drinking and using drugs is still shown as being cool. The numbers bear the tale. 21% of high school seniors say they get high and 41% of the same group report drinking alcohol.

Houve um tempo na história cinematográfica onde praticamente todos os atores/atrizes foram retratados na tela com um cigarro na mão. Fumar, estava implícito, era legal. Como resultado, todos faziam isso, inclusive os jovens. À medida que aumentava a consciência do perigo de fumar, desapareciam imagens "legais" de fumar. Infelizmente, o mesmo não se pode dizer das drogas e do álcool. Esses vícios são básicos na mídia diária. Simplesmente, beber e usar drogas ainda é mostrado como sendo legal. Os números contam a história. 21% dos alunos do ensino médio dizem que ficam bons e 41% do mesmo grupo relatam ter bebido álcool.
b. Materialism:

Materialismo:

We live in a society that promotes materialism and so we perpetuate this particular malady by instilling bad habits into our children. We teach them that the measure of success and happiness in life is how much stuff you have. Kids naturally want things – especially if their friends have something similar.
Unfortunately, there seems to be little restraint on guidance as we go about this.
We have a mentality of getting what we want and when we want it that has been ingrained in us since childhood. The unfortunate result is that there are devastating consequences for such continued behavior later in life.

Vivemos numa sociedade que promove o materialismo e, por isso, perpetuamos esta doença específica por incutir maus hábitos nos nossos filhos. Ensinamos-lhes que a medida de sucesso e felicidade na vida é a quantidade de coisas que você tem. As crianças naturalmente querem coisas - especialmente se seus amigos têm algo semelhante.

Infelizmente, parece haver pouca contenção na orientação à medida que avançamos nesta matéria.

Temos a mentalidade de obter o que queremos e quando o queremos que tem sido arraigado em nós desde a infância. O resultado infeliz é que há conseqüências devastadoras para tal comportamento continuado mais tarde na vida.

c. Education Disparity:

Disparidade educacional:

Education is important. Few people would dispute this well regarded fact. A good education (in comparison with a bad one) will provide a child with an increased chance of taking advantage of opportunities to be successful in life. Unfortunately, some people have it better than other. This is not an issue of just one school being better than another. Rather we are talking about whole classes of children being denied a proper education that will prepare them to compete in a job market with their peers and have the same access to their dreams.

A educação é importante. Poucas pessoas contestariam este fato bem considerado. Uma boa educação (em comparação com uma má) proporcionará à criança uma maior chance de aproveitar as oportunidades de ser bem - sucedida na vida. Infelizmente, algumas pessoas têm melhor do que outras. Esta não é uma questão de apenas uma escola ser melhor do que outra. Em vez disso, estamos a falar de negar a classes inteiras de crianças uma educação adequada que as preparará para competir num mercado de trabalho com os seus pares e ter o mesmo acesso aos seus sonhos.

Throughout Latin America, youth who are neither working nor in school are often labeled ninis, from the Spanish phrase "ni estudia ni trabaja."

Em toda a América Latina, os jovens que não estão a trabalhar nem a frequentar a escola são frequentemente rotulados de ninis, da frase espanhola "ni estudia ni trabaja".

One in five youth in the region – totaling more than 20 million people aged 15-24 – is living as a nini. Moreover, the problem has proven very persistent. Despite the strong economic performance of Latin America during the 2000s – with vibrant economic growth and a significant reduction in poverty and inequality – the proportion of ninis fell only marginally, and the number of ninis actually increased.

Um em cada cinco jovens da região - num total de mais de 20 milhões de pessoas com idades compreendidas entre os 15 e os 24 anos - vive como nini. Além disso, o problema tem-se revelado muito persistente. Apesar do forte desempenho económico da América Latina durante a década de 2000 - com um crescimento económico vibrante e uma redução significativa da pobreza e da desigualdade - a proporção de ninis diminuiu apenas marginalmente, e o número de ninis até aumentou.
