Scientists working at the European Southern Observatory (ESO), using the La Silla telescope, claim to have discovered the closest exoplanet to Earth. Cientistas que trabalham no Observatório Europeu do Sul (ESO), utilizando o telescópio La Silla, afirmam ter descoberto o exoplaneta mais próximo da Terra.

Exoplanet means planets orbiting stars other than the Sun. Exoplaneta significa planetas orbitando outras estrelas além do Sol.

Most of them are huge planets orbiting very near their star. A maioria deles são planetas enormes orbitando muito perto de sua estrela.

The newly discovered planet, which orbits Proxima Centauri, a star within the so-called “habitable zone”, has been named Proxima b. O planeta recém-descoberto, que orbita Proxima Centauri, uma estrela dentro da chamada “zona habitável”, foi denominado Proxima b.

Proxima Centauri is a red dwarf, which is the most common type of star in the galaxy. Proxima Centauri é uma anã vermelha, que é o tipo de estrela mais comum na galáxia.

Red dwarfs are much smaller than our Sun, and are very dim. As anãs vermelhas são muito menores que o nosso Sol e são muito fracas.

So what about life? Então e a vida?

Although the temperature of the planet is thought to be such that liquid water could exist, it is unlikely that Proxima b is habitable, as the planet is subject to stellar wind pressures of more than 2000 times those experienced by Earth from the solar wind. Embora se pense que a temperatura do planeta seja tal que possa existir água líquida, é improvável que Proxima b seja habitável, uma vez que o planeta está sujeito a pressões de vento estelar mais de 2.000 vezes aquelas experimentadas pela Terra a partir do vento solar.

First, the discovery is extremely exciting. Primeiro, a descoberta é extremamente emocionante.

The existence of a nearby planet in the habitable zone will perhaps increase the interest in efforts like Project Starshot, which aims to send microprobes (instruments that apply a stable and wellfocused beam of charged particles -electrons or ions- to a sample) to Proxima Centauri. A existência de um planeta próximo na zona habitável talvez aumente o interesse em esforços como o Projeto Starshot, que visa enviar microssondas (instrumentos que aplicam um feixe estável e bem focado de partículas carregadas - elétrons ou íons - a uma amostra) para Proxima Centauri .
