Increased oil recovery
There is more than 60% of all the oil still remaining in domestic wells in the US that have been abandoned by the major oil
companies. Many new technologies have been developed to recover this oil and the current price/barrel of 50-60 more than
absorbes the cost of implementing this technology. Chemicals have been developed and proven effective in fields throughout
the world that can recover 15-40% of this oil. Why can’t this technology be used here in the US? It would make us less
dependent on foreign oil. It would provide jobs for domestic oilfield workers and revenue for local communities and it has less
risk than drilling and exploring for new sources of oil since the oil is known to be there and the wells are already in place. I
believe the implications of developing our own oil field reserves are more widespread than just providing additional energy.

LINDA HOGAN
Linda Hogan is a Chickasaw writer. She is the author of several books, including Dwellings: A Spiritual History of The Natural
World, and the novels Power, Mean Spirit, and Solar Storms. Mean Spirit was a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize. Hogan’s
collection of poems entitled The Book of Medicines was a finalist for the National Book Critics Circle Award.
Hogan has received numerous awards, including a National Endowment for The Arts grant, a Guggenheim fellowship, the
Lannan Award for outstanding achievement in poetry, and the Five Civilized Tribes Museum play writing award. In 1998, she
was given the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Native Writers Circle of the Americas.
Besides poetry and fiction, Hogan’s works include nonfiction. She wrote a documentary narrative about the history of
American Indian Religious Freedom, Everything Has a Spirit, which aired on public television. Hogan was co-editor, with
Brenda Peterson, of Intimate Nature: The Bond Between Women and Animals and The Sweet Breathing of Plants: Women
Writing on the Green World. These writers also co-authored the book Sightings: The Gray Whales’Mysterious Journey.
Hogan’s The Woman Who Watches Over The World: A Native Memoir was published in 2002.
Hogan is one of three Indian writers hired by the Smithsonian National Museum of the American Indian to co-author a book
for the museum’s grand opening. Her section of the book is on tradition and how it has been carried into recent times.

MY FAIR LADY

This 1964 classic musical was a certified hit as soon as it was released, winning no less than eight Oscars, including film of
the year, and it’s not difficult to see why.
With its fantastical musical score, its sumptuous costumes and humorous script, this really is a gem of a musical, which is in
fact based on George Bernard Shaw’s play ‘Pygmalion’.
Although Julie Andrews was favoured for the role of Eliza Doolittle – the downtrodden flower girl – it was Hepburn who was
eventually cast. Although her rough cockney accent is a little hard to swallow, she excels as a reformed lady and literally
glides in her fantastic ball dress at the end of the film.
Rex Harrison is the definitive Henry Higgins – rude, obnoxious yet utterly charming – he handles the part with experience and
panache.
Of the many songs within the film, ‘I could have danced all night,’ ‘Why can’t a woman be more like a man,’ and ‘I’m getting
married in the morning’ are some of the best.
A little known fact about this film is that Hepburn sings none of her own songs – they were performed by an un-credited Marni
Nixon, which is why some think Andrews should have got the role. However, I don’t think the wholesome image of Andrews
would have suited this role and Hepburn does give a great performance, even if she is miming.
I don’t think there are many film lovers who can resist the old-fashioned charm of this rags-to-riches tale, which features a
fantastic script with some great one-liners, including Eliza’s faux pas at the upper class horse race. Yet my favourite line has
to be Higgins’s humorous closing remark: ‘Eliza, where the devil are my slippers.’
This film is the epitome of the well-made musical of yesteryear; it is beautifully acted and shot, and worth watching for its
pure nostalgic charm, as well as a good sing along.
