Probably the main issue in Brazil at this moment is the development of the PreSalt Oil & Gas project. News of the huge reserves available in the country's deepwater have been flooding all media channels.
If preliminary information is confirmed, Brazil will become a major player in this field. The presalt layer is seen by the government as the "passport to the future", because it could be hosting approximately 50 billion barrels of oil. As a reference, before the presalt layer was discovered, Brazil's known reserves were close to 14 billion barrels.
The reserves of three presalt areas have already been estimated, totaling between 9.5 to 15 billion barrels. They are: Tupy (5 to 8), Iara (3 to 4) and Parque das Baleias (1.5 to 3).
At this moment, the government is discussing the regulatory framework for presalt exploration. The creation of a second stateowned oil company has been discussed, but it seems that Petrobras will maintain its monopoly after all. The debate will probably take some time, and the presidential elections next year could make decisions and agreements even harder.
The fact is that the presalt is a reality and will have a huge impact in Brazilian economy. The whole Oil & Gas industry will have an enormous development over the next decades, and if politicians don't get too much on the way, the country and its population will be strongly benefited.
