Increasing Our Efforts to Fight False News

By Tessa Lyons, Product Manager - June 21, 2018

Over the last year and half, we have been committed to fighting false news through a combination of technology and human review, including removing fake accounts, partnering with fact-checkers, and promoting news literacy. This effort will never be finished and we have a lot more to do. Today, we’re announcing several updates as part of this work:
• Expanding our fact-checking program to new countries
• Expanding our test to fact-check photos and videos
• Increasing the impact of fact-checking by using new techniques, including identifying duplicates and using Claim Review
• Taking action against new kinds of repeat offenders
• Improving measurement and transparency by partnering with academics
(...)
We’re currently working with the commission to develop privacy-protected data sets, which will include a sample of inks that people engage with on Facebook. The academics selected by the commission will be able to study these links to better understand the kinds of content being shared on Facebook. Over time, this externally validated research will help keep us accountable and track our progress.

 TEXT III:
MOUNT RORAIMA

Mount Roraima is surrounded by three different countries (Venezuela, Brazil, and Guyana) whose borderlines intersect on the massive shelf, with all four sides being sheer 400-meter high cliffs. While its cliff walls are only scalable by the most experienced of climbers, there is a path up the mountain’s natural ramp-like path (usually a two-day hike). However, the mountain is worth a visit for more reasons than its impressive cliffs. Mount Roraima, part of Venezuela’s 30000-square-kilometer Canaima National Park, is the site of the highest peak of the country of Guyana’s Highland Range.

The mountains of this range, including Roraima, are considered to be some of the oldest geological formations known, some dating back to two billion years ago. Its near daily rains have also created a unique ecosystem which includes several endemic species, such as a unique carnivorous pitcher plant, and some of the highest waterfalls in the world. Culturally, the mountain has long held significance to the indigenous people of the area and features
prominently in their myths and folklore. […]

Text IV pictures ordinary events about a mixed deaf and hearing family: a deaf father (Desmond), a mother who’s an American Sign Language interpreter (Helen), and their hearing son (Cedric). In this comic stripe, Cedric talks about his father to his playmates, who are afraid of Desmond because:

A) Desmond is using gesturing language to tell his son Cedric that he doesn’t like his playmates to look at him funny like that.
B) Cedric asks Desmond to take his playmates to the planet “Eyeth” to teach them a gesturing language spoken by CIA alien agents.
C) Desmond comes from another planet called “Eyeth”, where people have eyes hidden in the back of their head and speak in a gesturing language.
D) Cedric made them think Desmond’s a CIA alien agent who speaks a top secret language and can see without looking straight to the person’s eyes.
E) Desmond is looking at them using his hidden eyes he keeps in the back of his head while conspiring against them in a gesturing language with his son Cedric.

Emergency after 70,000 Venezuelan migrants cross
Brazil border

A state of “social emergency” has been declared in Brazil in response to the massive influx of Venezuelan migrants fleeing economic meltdown at home. President Temer said that funds could be immediately transferred to the northern state of Roraima, which shares a border with Venezuela, and that troops patrolling the border would be doubled to 200. About 70,000 Venezuelans have crossed into Roraima in recent months, with at least 40,000 settling in Boa Vista, the state capital, according to migration authorities. Many arrive on foot with almost nothing, lacking enough money to pay for food and shelter. […]
