TEXTO 1The following text refers to questions 01 to 03.

LAUGHING ALL THE WAY

Understanding jokes is part of the process of native language acquisition, and jokes are part of the charm that belongs to any language. Learning to understand jokes in a new language is both a cause, and a consequence, of language proficiency (Cook 2000).

The most obvious benefit of understanding jokes is that it can help students feel more comfortable in their new language. A shared moment of humor lowers the affective filter, that invisible barrier that makes learners feel awkward and uncomfortable. A low affective filter is one of the cornerstones of successfully learning a new language (Krashen 1982). If a class can laugh together, they are likely to learn better together, too. Jokes based on wordplay have additional benefits because they build metalinguistic awareness, or conscious awareness of the forms of language, and this, _( I )_, helps in learning more language (Ely and McCabe 1994; Zipke 2008; Lems 2011). In particular, metalinguistic awareness boots reading comprehension and encourages higher-order thinking.

___( II )___ native speakers need to access a great deal of linguistic information and background knowledge to “get” a joke (Aarons 2012). At the same time, jokes that are based on wordplay in another language can be really hard to understand because they need to be processed very quickly. In a social setting where everyone is standing around chatting, understanding a joke that comes up may seem like a high-stakes test. Not understanding a joke in this situation can make someone feel like an outsider and create a sense of isolation. __( III )___, an important part of learning a new language is learning to enjoy its jokes.

Puns: A special form of joke

Puns are a special form of humor based on double meanings. Puns are sometimes nicknamed "the lowest form of humor" and often greeted with groans, but in fact, the language knowledge needed to understand a pun is very sophisticated (Pollack 2011).___( IV )__ they require processing the sound and meaning of words twice, puns demand considerable language agility. __( V )__ humor based on sight gags, funny facial expressions, or amusing visual arrangements, the humor of pun is based on language play.

 👍  Comentários e Gabarito  D
TÓPICO - COMPREENSÃO TEXTUAL, TROCADILHOS:
O texto afirma que
a) native speakers take longer to "get" jokes than ordinary people.
b) learners feel uncomfortable when their affective filter is affected by metalinguistic awareness.
c) laughing in class is very healthy once students can understand a joke's inner sophisticated meaning.
d) one way puns differ from jokes regards the skills involved to understand them.
 CORRETA conforme o trecho:
-"[...] Puns are a special form of humor based on double meanings... Because they require processing the sound and meaning of words twice, puns demand considerable language agility. Unlike humor based on sight gags, funny facial expressions, or amusing visual arrangements, the humor of pun is based on language play."
e) in a meeting surrounded by other people, it is really advisable to tell jokes in order to lower the affective filter and entertain the participants.numa reunião rodeada de outras pessoas, é muito aconselhável contar piadas para diminuir o filtro afetivo e entreter os participantes.
(1) How did I escape Iraq? Iran. – Como escapei do Iraque? (Irã. / Eu corri)("IRAN" e "I RAN"  apresentam a mesma pronúncia /áirén/)
(2) Where are French fries made? In Greece. – Onde são feitas as batatas fritas? (na Grécia / na gordura)("GREECE" e "GREASE" apresentam a mesma pronúncia /grís/)
(3) I can't stand your way, no pun intended, please. (WAY-jeito, WEIGH-peso)
(4) Why couldn’t the bicycle stand up on its own? Because it’s two tired. ("TWO TIRED" e "TOO TIRED" apresentam a mesma pronúncia).

Brazil Plans to Implement a Control Center on Border with Argentina and Paraguay

FOLHA ONLINE 03/20/2015
RENATA AGOSTINI
FROM SÃO PAULO
MARIANA CARNEIRO
FROM BUENOS AIRES

The Brazilian government started negotiations with Argentina to implement a Center of Integrated Command and Control in the Triple Border -which unites the two countries and Paraguay- as a way to intensify anti-smuggling efforts in the area.

The information was given on Thursday (19) by the Minister of Justice José Eduardo Cardozo, at a forum held by Folha in São Paulo, entitled "Smuggling in Brazil".

The idea is to bring the police forces of the three countries which could draw together intelligence and enforcement operations. The neighbors could help each other also with commercial information and immigration in the region.
Crack seizures on the main border between Brazil and Paraguay have soared in the last five years
"Even if we put a man every 50 feet along the border, it would not be enough supervision. We need intelligence," the minister said.

He said that border control is one of the main problems faced by Brazil in regards to public safety, and the solution would come from integrated actions combined with the use of technology.

According to the Brazilian proposal, Paraguay would be exempt from the project cost, which would be funded by Brazil and Argentina, the minister said.

The experience derived from the Integrated Centers erected in the 12 host cities for the World Cup was considered successful and inspired the idea of a unified initiative between the three countries.

The region of the Triple Border, where the Brazilian city of Foz do Iguaçu is located, is a major entry point for smuggled goods in the country. Most come from Paraguay.

In the film Jane Hawking is played by Felicity Jones, who says:

FELICITY: I think there was an immediate sexual attraction, but at the same time there was a meeting of minds, and I think they challenged each other as well, I think there was a competitiveness between them, which often, when two people who are quite different… and I think it was that difference between them that brought them together.

But the young couple hadn’t been together very long before Stephen Hawking was diagnosed as having Motor Neurone Disease, also known as ALS, or Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis. In The Theory of Everything Stephen Hawking is played by Eddie Redmayne, who talked about the physicist’s famous voice machine:

EDDIE: His relationship with the voice; I mean, the voice itself. It had never occurred to me when I got this part, “Why has Stephen Hawking got an American voice?” And the answer was, that was the first technology that came, and because his voice then became so related to… or his icon became so related to that voice, he’s never wanted to change it because that’s what we know as his new identity, and vocal identity, and my God is identity important!

Jane Hawking nursed her husband for many years and, as Felicity Jones says, they managed to maintain a sense of humour.

FELICITY: That’s so important, and that’s what we’ve wanted in telling this story is how both Jane and Stephen are absolutely hilarious , they have a very dry sense of humour, a very English sense of humour, and I think that’s partly what enabled them to cope with such difficult circumstances was that there’s always a witticism about it, and meeting Stephen, he was incredibly witty and insightful ... and a very dry sense of humour.

Stephen and Jane Hawking divorced in the 1990s and Jane subsequently published her memoir as Music to the Stars. It was later revised and republished as Travelling to Infinity. Both titles reflect Stephen Hawking’s status as the world’s most important living scientist. As Eddie Redmayne says, this is a remarkable achievement , under the circumstances

EDDIE: The astounding thing is that Stephen Hawking was given two years to live aged 21, and he’s now 71, 72. I mean, it’s against all odds , and it’s a staggering thing, and whether it is to do with his passion, his drive, his outlook on life, his humour, the specific strain of what the disease is, no one knows, but it’s a staggering thing, and he is a great icon of hope.
