By Kiko Farkas

To me, being in the skies has a literal meaning.

I ____ always ___ by airplanes. Sempre fui fascinado por aviões.

When I was 12, I ___ all the way to the distant Viracopos airport to watch the 747 land for the first time in Brazil.

I also recall having gone to that same airport when Grandma Clara traveled to Europe.

The aircraft was an elegant VC-10 with 4 rear-engines.

I don’t know exactly how but I ended up visiting the empty interior of the plane, while being prepared for take-off.

I never forgot this experience! Nunca esqueci essa experiência!

The small staircase that went up and down in the middle of the tail seemed to be so high!

I love airplanes and I love to draw them. Eu adoro aviões e adoro desenhá-los.

Particularly when I’m up in the skies. Principalmente quando estou no céu.

I’ve never been any good at chatting up girls. I’ve discovered it’s something you can either do or you can’t – and, if you can’t, you’re always meeting the blokes that can.

Some of my friends are fantastic – they never fail. One of them will walk into a bar, stroll up to a girl. “ Hullo there,” he says. “What are you doing here?”

The girl will go weak at the knees and giggle. “ Waiting for someone like you”.

I tried that approach. “ Hullo there,” I said. “ What are you doing here?” Eu tentei essa abordagem. “Olá,” eu disse. " O que você está fazendo aqui?"

Avoiding creeps like you”. “Evitando canalhas como você”.

But I kept trying. A friend gave me a book called How to Score at a Party, and I learnt that basically what you have to do is go round and grin at everybody. Eventually you’ve got to get lucky. Mas continuei tentando. Um amigo me deu um livro chamado How to Score at a Party, e aprendi que basicamente o que você precisa fazer é dar uma volta e sorrir para todo mundo. No fim você terá que ter sorte.

So I went to this party and grinned solidly for four hours.

“Hi, there... hello there... what are you.” "Oi, olá... olá... como vai você."

Not a light. Total failure. Não é uma luz. Falha total.

I went home that night and, when I looked in the bathroom mirror, I saw I had got this great piece of green cabbage stuck between my front teeth. I’d been walking around all evening with it.

“ Hi, there... hello there”. “Olá... olá”.

Changing lifestyles and new eating habits

Americans today have different eating habits than they had in the past. There is a wide selection of food available. They have a broader knowledge of nutrition, so they buy more fresh fruit and vegetables than ever before. At the same time, Americans purchase increasing quantities of sweets, snacks and sodas.

Statistics show that the way people live determines the way they eat. The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) and the food industry compile sales statistics and keep accurate records. For instance, red meat, which used to be the most popular choice for dinner, is no longer an American favorite. Instead, chicken, turkey, and fish have become more popular. Sales of these foods have greatly increased in recent years. This is probably a result of the awareness of the dangers of eating food that contains high levels of cholesterol, or animal fat. It is more than likely that an unhealthy diet can damage people’s health.

According to a recent survey, Americans also change their eating patterns to meet the needs of different situations. For example, they choose pasta, fruit, and vegetables to give them strength for physical activity. Adults choose foods rich in fiber to prepare them for business appointments. For romantic dinners, however, they choose shrimp and lobster.

Americans’ awareness of nutrition, along with their changing tastes and needs, leads them to consume a wide variety of foods - foods for health, for fun, and simply for good taste.

Coldplay – Viva la Vida or Death and all his friends

Comments have been made about Coldplay’s fourth record. Rumors were heard that the group would be changing their style totally with the help of producer Brian Eno. After the release all theories can be ___: there are some changes, but the group goes wrong when they abuse of the kind of sound used by Eno for U2, 20 years ago, in their Joshua Tree album. Coldplay’s compositions have potential, but they end up having a taste of déjà vu and even when monotony is broken by Hispanic elements, the band offers nothing new, only a record to be played noncommittedly. It’s very little for a quartet that aims to be at the top of the world.

A Cherry a Day ...

Cherries may prove more effective than aspirin in relieving pain, according to Muraleedharan Nair at Michigan State University in East Lansing. Nair is experimenting with the idea of converting the anthocyanins into a tablet form. Meanwhile, he says, “ If a person can consume around twenty cherries, that’s enough dosage to act like one or two aspirin a day”.

When a man has children, the first thing he has to learn is that he is not the boss of the house. I am certainly not the boss of my house. There is no wisdom I can give new fathers more profound than what I have just said: you are not the boss of the house.

When one of the children comes to you and says, “ Dad, can I go explore the Upper Nile?” your answer must be “ Go and ask your mother”.

Only once did I make the great permission mistake.

One of the children came to me and said, “Dad, can I go out and play?”

“ Sure”, I replied. “I don’t see why not”.

That was the last time I couldn’t see why not. My wife came in and said, “Did you let that child go out?”

“ Yeah”, I said.

“Well, next time check with me. He’s being punished.”

From that day on I knew my place; and whenever a child starts to say, “ Dad, can I...” even though it is my name, I always reply, “ What did your mother say?”

And even if the child tells me that she got permission, I still say, “ Very fine. Just bring me a note from your mother. It doesn’t have to be notarized. A simple signature and date will do.”

Ironically, even though the father is not the boss of the house, the mother will try to use him as a threat: “ When your father comes home, he’s going to spank you. And this time I’m not going to stop him”.

48 – (EEAR/CFS/2009-BCT-TURMA2-SARGENTO)

According to the text, when a child asks for permission,

a) the mother must check with the father.

b) the father has to be the boss of the house.
