What is gender anyway? […]
Afinal, o que é o gênero?
History and science suggest that gender is more subtle and complicated than anatomy.
(It’s separate from sexual orientation, too, which determines which sex we’re attracted to.)
Gender helps us organize the world into two boxes, his and hers, and gives us a way of quickly sizing up every person we see on the street.
“Gender is a way of making the world secure,” says feminist scholar Judith Butler.
“O gênero é uma forma de tornar o mundo seguro”, afirma a acadêmica feminista Judith Butler.
Though some scholars like Butler consider gender largely a social construct, others increasingly see it as a complex interplay of biology, genes, hormones and culture.
Genesis set up the initial dichotomy: “Male and female he created them.”
O Gênesis estabeleceu a dicotomia inicial: “Homem e mulher os criou”.
And historically, the differences between men and women were thought to be distinct. […]
E historicamente, as diferenças entre homens e mulheres eram consideradas distintas.
But, as society changed, the stereotypes faded. […]
Still, even the most diehard feminist would likely agree that we are not exactly alike.
In many cases, our habits, our posture, and even cultural identifiers like the way we dress set us apart. Now as transgender people become more visible and challenge the old boundaries, they’ve given voice to another debate–whether gender comes in just two flavors. […] “Transgender” is an umbrella term that includes anyone whose gender identity or expression differs from the sex of their birth–whether they have surgery or not. [...] However, male or female, we all start life looking pretty much the same.
  • Newsweek, May 21st, 2007.

WHEN the personal computer (PC) turned 25 last year, many anniversary articles read like obituaries. There was general agreement that the PC had become a commodity product, its makers mere box-shifters, and that growth prospects were mediocre. Further consolidation was all the industry had to look forward to. The announcement on August 27th that Acer, a Taiwanese PCmaker, would pay $710m to buy Gateway, a smaller American rival, seems to fit that picture.

The combined firm will be the world's third-largest PC-maker by unit shipments. Acer will have the size and global presence to compete with the two American heavyweights, Hewlett-Packard (HP) and Dell, as well as Lenovo, a Chinese firm which will drop to fourth place if the deal goes ahead. But the takeover also shows that there is still life in the PC business—and will be for years to come.

This year the number of PCs sold will reach an all-time high of nearly 260m. Much of the growth is being generated by consumers and small businesses. Both increasingly prefer laptop PCs to desktops; in some countries, such as Japan, the former already outsell the latter. In America, the world's biggest PC market, this will happen by the end of the year, according to IDC, a marketresearch firm. Above all, emerging economies such as China and India are making manufacturers happy: their rising middle classes and small businesses have discovered the PC. In China, shipments are growing nearly four times as fast as in America.

If China stays on the same economic track, it would become the world's largest economy in 2027, surpassing the United States, according to projections by Goldman, Sachs & Co., a Wall Street investment bank. And unlike Japan, which rose in the 1980s only to fade again, China still has a huge pool of workers to tap and an emerging middle class that is just starting to reach critical mass. Many development economists believe China still has 20 years of fairly high growth ahead.

-TEXTO:

The deal, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh said in an Aug. 13 speech to Parliament, is "another step in our journey to regain our due place in global councils." But few of the deal's opponents heard his speech that day - they were too busy shouting him down and disrupting Parliament, as they have done nearly every day since. The opponents run the gamut from right-wing Hindu nationalists to the communists, who are key to Singh's parliamentary majority. The nuclear agreement does not need parliamentary approval, but Singh's government could collapse if his communist allies pull their support because of the deal.

Most of their criticism stems from the Hyde Act, passed last year by American lawmakers to allow nuclear trade with India. It contains a nonbinding clause directing the U.S. president to determine whether India is cooperating with American efforts to confront Iran about its nuclear program. That has been seized on by Indian critics as proof that Washington intends to direct New Delhi's foreign policy.
