Instant Expert: Hurricane Katrina – The Aftermath

Hurricane Katrina has had a devastating impact on the Gulf Coast of the US. […].

Here, New Scientist explains how hurricanes form and why Hurricane Katrina was so destructive.

How hurricanes are born

A hurricane is a fiercely powerful, rotating form of tropical storm that can be 124 to 1240 miles in diameter. The term hurricane is derived from Hurican, the name of a native American storm god.

Hurricanes are characterised by a calm central region of low pressure between 12 to 60 miles in diameter, known as the eye. They occur in tropical regions and are called typhoons in South-East Asia and the Pacific, and cyclones in the Indian Ocean. Over its lifetime, one of these storms can release as much energy as 10,000 nuclear bombs.

The seed for hurricane formation is a cluster of thunderstorms over warm tropical waters. Hurricanes can only form and be fed when the sea-surface temperature exceeds 27 °C and the surrounding atmosphere is calm.

These requirements are met between June and November in the northern hemisphere.

Under these conditions, large quantities of water evaporate and condense into clouds and rain - releasing heat in the process. It is this heat energy, combined with the rotation of the Earth, that drives a hurricane.

When the warm column of air from the sea surface first begins to rise, it causes an area of low pressure. This in turn creates wind as air is drawn into the area. This spinning wind drags up more moisture-laden air from the sea surface in a self-enhancing feedback process that swells the storm.

Cold air falls back to the ocean surface through the eye and on the outside of the storm.

Initially, when wind speeds reach 23 miles per hour, these mild, wet and grey weather systems are know as depressions. Hurricane Katrina formed in this way over the south-eastern Bahamas on 23 August 2005 and was labelled Tropical Depression 12. […]

Paris by subway
It’s practical, cheap and less tiring

The Paris subway is famous for its charm and, above all, its efficency. Built in 1900, by World War I it already had more lines (six active ones and four under construction) than São Paulo has today, in the middle of 2003. Today, the French capital has 14 lines and 297 stations that literally enable one to visit every corner – all neighborhoods and suburbs – not to speak of the five lines that take travelers to airports and trains.

Equally charming are the entrances to the subway stations, which are decorated with an art noveau portico. A complete map of the subway network is available as well.

To find one’s way, all users need to know at which station they wish to get off (which is indicated in every tourist guide). It is usually not necessary to change trains too often. Just one important tip: when leaving the station, do not throw away your ticket – at the “gares” (stations with many junctions) passengers also need to show their ticket at the turnstile upon exiting the station.

It is therefore possible for tourists to visit all of Paris – from the Latin Quarter to the Sacré-Coeur Basilica, and from the Bastile to Notre Dame Cathedral – exclusively by subway. They can thereby save money on taxi fares while walking only short distances between the stations and the places to be visited. And can you imagine: there are still people who say that Paris is not a hospitable city...

According to a study recently published in the Journal of Behavioral Medicine, a drop in cholesterol, even a slight one, can improve your mood. Researchers quizzed 212 men and women on a 12-month cholesterol-lowering diet about anxiety, depression, and hostility. They found that most people who reduced their level of total cholesterol and LDLs (“bad” cholesterol) also reported feeling less anxious, with women expressing the biggest improvement. The link between mood and cholesterol is unclear, though researchers theorize that improving your health has a positive effect on your psyche.

WHAT TO DO

For a mood boost, try these cholesterol-reducing tips:
1. Choose foods low in saturated fat like low-fat or nonfat dairy products.

2. Cook with olive oil instead of butter or margarine.

3. Limit your intake of high-cholesterol foods by selecting lean cuts of red meat and eating more broiled or grilled fish and skinless chicken breasts.

4. Eat grain, fruits, and vegetables. They are low in saturated fat and cholesterol, and are loaded with vitamins, minerals, and fiber.

5. Exercise regularly.

Food can be dangerous for your health!

When you go to a restaurant you often think that the food you are ordering is good for you. But many restaurants serve healthy food, like fish or salad, with a sauce or dressing that uses a lot of oil, fat, or sugar. The British Food Standards Agency wants all restaurants to say in their menus exactly what is in each dish, how many calories, how much fat, and what additives. They think that restaurants don’t give their customers enough information, and that this new plan could help people to have a healthier diet.

But chefs are not happy with the Agency’s plan. One top chef said, ‘People are not stupid. They know that many sauces have butter and cream in them. But if we put on a menu that a dish has 1,000 calories, nobody is going to order it!’

However, many doctors agree with the plan. Bruce Ward, Professor of Medicine, said, ‘People know that cigarettes are bad for them, because it tells you on the packet. But when they go to a restaurant they often have no idea if the food is healthy or not. Food products that have a lot of calories, fat, and sugar need a health warning, exactly like cigarettes.’

  • Professor Penelope Brown and Professor Stephen Levinson wrote in 1987 (2nd edition) a famous book entitled Politeness: some universals in language usage (Cambridge University Press). The book is the real portrait of American and British uses of politeness on a daily basis, especially in several social encounters where oral language is the fundamental mode of communication. One specific particle in oral communication is what Brown and Levinson call “hedges”, that is to say, a particle or word that modifies the force of a request, command or information in order for the speaker to maintain a polite way of expressing her/his intentions through language.
Based on these assumptions, choose the ONLY option below that does not take into account politeness in requests and information:
A) (At a dinner table): “Could you please pass me the salt?”
B) (At the party): “Would you mind dancing with me?”
C) (At the hospital): “Please, wait until I check if the patient is ready to leave the hospital.”
