The Rolling Stones Impose High Ticket Prices for U.S. Tour
"Is that a lot?" says Mick Jagger
By Jerry Hopkins November 15, 1969
Mick Jagger performing on stage circa 1969.
LOS ANGELES—The Rolling Stones have returned to the United States for their first tour in more than three years.

It begins with two evening shows at the Forum in Los Angeles November 8th, with tickets priced from $5.50 to $8.50. (This compares to a $7.50
top price for a Blind Faith concert in the same arena, a $6.50 top for the Doors. And in both those concerts, tickets started at $3.50.) In arranging
this show, a previously-set hockey game between the Los Angeles Kings and the New York Rangers was rescheduled – at the request of the man who owns both the Forum and the Kings.

Acts appearing at the concerts here will include Terry Reid, who will appear on all the dates, and the Ike and Tina Turner Revue. Negotiations were continuing to have Ike and Tina, B. B. King and Chuck Berry join the Stones in several other cities.

Promoters of the L.A. concerts said the gross for the evening would exceed $275,000 if the Stones filled the 18,000 seats in the Forum both shows.
Similar grosses, on a per show basis, were expected throughout the tour, with the Stones getting guarantees of $25,000 a concert and up, against
take home percentages running close to $60,000.

Although figures such as these are not unusual for tours by groups of this magnitude, they did bring strong criticism from, among others, Ralph Gleason in the San Francisco Chronicle.

"Can the Rolling Stones actually need all that money?" Gleason asked. "If they really dig the black musicians as much as every note they play and every syllable they utter indicates, is it possible to take out a show with, say, Ike and Tina and some of the older men like Howlin’ Wolf and let them share in the loot? How much can the Stones take back to Merrie England after taxes, anyway? How much must the British manager and the American manager and the agency rake off the top?"

"Paying five, six and seven dollars for a Stones concert at the Oakland Coliseum for, say, an hour of the Stones seen a quarter of a mile away because the artists demand such outrageous fees that they can only be obtained under these circumstances, says a very bad thing to me about the artists’ attitude towards the public. It says they despise their own
audience."

When Mick Jagger was confronted by this criticism at a press conference at the Beverly Wilshire Hotel, he left the door slightly open to giving a free concert sometime during the 13-city, 18-concert tour, but his tone didn't seem too promising.

"There has been talk of that," he said. "I should think toward the end. We'll have to see how things go. I don't want to plan that right now, 'cause we're gonna be here some while. We've got time for all that. I don't want to say that’s what we want to do or not do. I'm leaving it rather blurry. I'm not committing myself."

And about the ticket cost, he strongly indicated that if some people thought prices were high, they might have been a lot worse.

“We were offered a lot of money to do some very good dates – money in front in Europe, before we left, really a lot of bread. We didn’t accept
because we thought they’d be too expensive on the basis of the money we’d get. We didn’t say that unless we walk out of America with X dollars,
we ain’t gonna come. We’re really not into that sort of economic scene. Either you’re gonna sing and all that crap, or you’re gonna be an economist.
I really don’t know whether this is more expensive than recent tours by local bands. I don’t know how much people can afford. I’ve no idea. Is that a lot? You’ll have to tell me.”

[...] When Mick Jagger was confronted by this criticism at a press conference at the Beverly Wilshire Hotel, he left the door slightly open to giving a free concert sometime during the 13-city, 18-concert tour, but his tone didn't seem too promising.
[...] "There has been talk of that," he said. "I should think toward the end. We'll have to see how things go. I don't want to plan that right now, 'cause we're gonna be here some while. We've got time for all that. I don't want to say that’s what we want to do or not do. I'm leaving it rather blurry. I'm not committing myself."
("Falou-se disso", disse ele. "Eu deveria pensar no final. Vamos ter que ver como as coisas acontecem. Eu não quero planejar isso agora, porque nós vamos estar aqui algum tempo. Nós temos tempo para tudo isso. Eu não quero dizer que é o que queremos fazer ou não fazer. Estou pensando sobre o assunto. Não estou me comprometendo ".)

Female Prisoners Post Sexy Pictures of Themselves on Social Network
ESTELITA HASS CARAZZAI
FROM CURITIBA
At least two detainees have taken pictures and
published them on social networking sites from inside Guarapuava Public Jail, in the state of Paraná.

The pictures, taken on a phone, were found by prison guards and posted online last April.

The 30 year-old detainees are in jail after being accused of drug trafficking. Both are serving provisional sentences, and are yet to be convicted.

One has been in jail since April, and the other for a year.

Detainees are not granted possession of cell phones, and, due to this breach, they were awarded a disciplinary sanction and have since been prevented from receiving visits or food sent by family members for 30 days.

Additionally, this occurrence may prevent them from shortening their sentences if they are eventually convicted.

They appear posing in underwear on concrete beds in the female dormitory, which is decorated with animal print.

After the prison guards discovered the images, they inspected the room the two women shared and found the cell phone used to take the pictures.

“This unfortunately happens. Detainees can hide things very well”, the prison chief, Altemir Nascimento, said.

According to Nascimento, 40 cell phones have been seized so far this year in the prison (which also houses men).
CELL PHONE THROWING

The location of the prison in downtown Guarapuava makes matters worse. According to the prison chief, during sunbathing, pedestrians toss cell
phones over the wall.

“Cell phones and drugs are thrown over the wall. This happens regularly. On every sunny day two or three items are thrown”, Nascimento said.

At the beginning of the year, in order to bring the "deliveries" to a halt, the prison chief decided to install a protective net over the patio. Since then 77 cell phones have been caught on the net.

 TEXTO 1:
Why It's Okay to Mourn Robin Williams
Robin Williams is to be celebrated, as his wife has asked, as his talents demand.

Robin Williams made art that changed my generation. His humor, his storytelling, and his thousand and one different impressions is what I watched growing up.

He was no celebrity. He was an artist.

The man taught the world lessons.

In Aladdin, we learned to believe in things that seem impossible. In Jumanji, we learned to finish what we started with dignity, even when it sucks, even if we get dirty, even if it’s been haunting us since childhood. In Mrs. Doubtfire, we learned that a father’s love is fierce, and humility is of the essence when trying to keep a family together.

The list goes on with Hook, and Patch Adams, and The Birdcage - all movies where we learn that humor heals. All proof that laughter really is the best medicine.

See, Robin Williams was not just a “celebrity”. He was a representation of dozens of different characters in humanity, and more. Besides being a creepy photo developer, and a doctor, and the bicentennial man, he was there to be the lost boy, and the genie, and the scientist that made green Flubber.

FLUBBER, YOU GUYS. DID YOU FORGET ABOUT FLUBBER TIL I JUST SAID IT?

See, exactly. Childhood memories, eh? A little chuckle over the flubbski? I bet.

Not just any celebrity can bring about epic feelings of childhood. Robin Williams is one of the few artists in our time that has that gift.

Robin Williams is to be celebrated, as his wife has asked, as his talents demand.

But it’s also okay to mourn our loss.

We, as a people, have lost something really huge. We lost the man who wasn’t afraid of letting us in. We lost the man who brought us along on his journey even though we couldn’t possibly believe someone would be crazy enough to take it in the first place.

And most devastating, we lost another battle with depression.

Robin Williams signifies the real struggles that are taking our friends, our family, our artists away from us. We can no longer ignore the mental health issues that torture even the happiest “seeming” of souls.

So this loss is a wakeup call and perhaps, one final lesson that we can take away from Robin Williams’ brilliant and colorful life.

No matter how inspired or creative one may be, we never know the dark forces that haunt an individual behind closed doors. And it’s not for us to judge - or detect - or prescribe.

There’s only one thing we can learn from this.

Compassion is key. Art is essential. Laughter is medicine.

That’s what I learned in my 27 years on this planet with Robin Williams’ movies. As an actress, I admire his ability to think on his feet, and to step into any character, and to blow my mind with creativity. But as a human - from age five and up - he taught me that compassion is key. Art is essential. And laughter is medicine.

Robin Williams made me laugh so hard that I know he was put on this planet for a reason. He entertained us and moved us and made us feel things we needed to feel. He inspired me, and I’m sure countless others, to want to perform and share myself with the world as he did - authentically and unapologetically.

And so it’s okay to mourn someone who could do all of those things. It’s okay - necessary even - to grieve for the loss of a talented artist who represented so many things you and I might never get to experience. It’s okay. It’s okay to be sad.

And then, as hard as we grieve, we must equally celebrate what Mr. Williams did leave behind. Start the films rolling. Celebrate what we do have on film - those thousand and one impressions he did so fearlessly and consistently.

After all, we can never take films for granted. There is always something new to see. I’m sure we have plenty of new lessons to learn that we’ve forgotten about since Aladdin first graced our living rooms as kids. I think Robin Williams had a lot to say, and I’m willing to bet, that we can spend the rest of our lives trying to figure out all the things he had to share and still not discover everything he had to offer.

And I don’t even know if that’s what he would have wanted, but I do know that artists take great pleasure in having their art outlive them. To have their art influence future generations. To make this world a more beautiful, more compassionate, more alive place. That’s why most of us get caught up in the arts to begin with - because we’ve seen it outlast centuries and we know that it’s timeless.

And you and I both know, that Robin Williams’ art is more than timeless - it’s the gift that keeps on giving.

So I loudly declare, that there’s no need to feel guilty for realizing and mourning our loss.

Because as Mr. Williams said in his unforgettable portrayal of Hunter “Patch” Adams:

“You treat a disease, you win, you lose. You treat a person, I guarantee you, you’ll win, no matter what the outcome.”

I think that Mr. Williams treated us - as a whole, as a people - and we are all better off because of it.

TEXTO 2The following text refers to questions 15 to 17.
Whale Watching Season Starts Off Brazil’s North-East Coast
Folha went to the southern coast off the state of Bahia to take part in a whale watching tour GUSTAVO SIMON

SPECIAL ENVOY TO CARAVELAS (STATE OF BAHIA)

With cameras in their hands and their sights set on the sea, 14 tourists crowd the stern of a catamaran, anxiously looking for a dark spot in the seawater.

The sound similar to a bored sigh is enough to change the mood aboard: cameras start snapping, eyes scan the horizon, bodies move around, shouts of “How beautiful!” and “Over there!” can be heard - even from the tour guides.

The “sigh” that can be heard is actually a water spray that is expelled by humpback whales as they reach the surface to breathe.

Humpback whales can be spotted off the Brazilian coast - especially off Bahia state - between July and November every year, when they reproduce.

At this time tourists will almost definitely spot humpback whales during tours. Conservation programs and a hunting ban have had such an impact on the growth in the humpback population that, last May, this species was taken off the endangered species list in Brazil.

The month of August marks the beginning of the high season for whale watching off Bahia coast, which lasts until September.

ABROLHOS

In addition to whale watching, tourists can visit Abrolhos, a cluster of islands 70km from the mainland. It is one of the highlights among the tours that leave from Caravelas, around 880km from Salvador, the capital of the state of Bahia.

The five islands are home to every single species of corals that exist in Brazil, and they also are at the heart of the first national marine park, created in 1983, the only one of its kind in Brazil - and one that stretches out to Timbebas coral reef off Alcobaça.

To reach the park tourists must pay a fee of US$ 15 in addition to the boat trip there. Once they reach the cluster of islands, the clear waters soon reveal the local biodiversity, considered one of the richest in the southern part of the Atlantic Ocean.

From the boat it is possible to spot fish, sea-turtles, jelly fish, starfish and countless birds.

They dominate each part of the cluster of islands: Sueste is where brown boobies can be spotted; yellowed-browed woodpeckers crowd around Guarita; frigatebirds stay at Redonda; Siriba, the only place where tourists can disembark, is home to masked boobies.

Birds are less common at Santa Bárbara, where there is a lighthouse and marine life centers as well as the Chico Mendes Institute for Biodiversity Conservation (ICM Bio in the Portuguese acronym).

On the tracks, at Siriba and Santa Bárbara - a special authorization concedes powers to visit the latter - it is important to protect oneself from the sun: there are very few trees.

Closer to the islands diving (with an oxygen tank or snorkel) is another sought after activity. This is another way of witnessing the local biodiversity from a new perspective.

If you have the time, an overnight tour on the waters of Abrolhos can be booked. Instead of returning to the continent, the tour allows more time for diving (which includes a nighttime dive) and a visit to Santa Bárbara.
