Managing globalization: if it’s here to stay, what do we know?
  • Daniel Altman
Two decades have passed since the word “globalization” started showing up with any frequency in discussions of business and economics.
At first, the focus was on Western companies trying to compete with cheaper, sometimes better imports from Japan, South Korea, China and other countries.
It was a straight fight: the battle lines were drawn along each country’s borders.
Later on, things become more complex. Asian companies started designing and assembling products in the West. Western companies opened up new fronts by sending jobs abroad - not just in manufacturing but in service industries as well.
Mais tarde, as coisas tornam-se mais complexas. As empresas asiáticas começaram a conceber e a montar produtos no Ocidente.
At the turn of the millennium, there was a lot of talk about whether globalization was a Good Thing or a Bad Thing.
One side argued that it allowed big, multinational corporations to exploit workers in poor countries to pad their profit margins.
The other side retorted that the expansion of these corporations into the developing world offered the best hope for raising living standards.
  • "Living standard"(noun)(standard of living) - Padrão de vida.
  • "improve/raise + living standard",
One side complained that globalization was creating and destroying industries too quickly for the labor force to adjust.
  • "too quickly" - muito rapidamente, rápido demais, precipitadamente.
The other side answered that these shifts were rapidly improving the world’s ability to use its resources efficiently.
Now, it’s pretty clear that globalization, be it good or bad, is an Unavoidable Thing (...)

I’m a boss and I say we should work less
Sou chefe e digo que deveríamos trabalhar menos

If there’s one thing the pandemic taught us all it’s that work is tiring whether we’re doing it from the office or from home.
Unproductive jobs led millions of people to drop out of the workforce altogether and a record number of Americans have quit their jobs because of burnout, low pay, childcare and eldercare.
To entice people back into the job market, employers have increased payment.
However, inflation has wiped that away and it hasn’t worked.
So here’s a crazy solution: let people work less.
I know, it sounds radical, but workers are really into the idea and they are more productive.
For the past eight weeks, thousands of people in the United Kindgom have tested a four-day schedule - with no cut to their pay.
Unsurprisingly, some workers have said they feel happier, healthier and are doing better in their jobs.
In 1930, the economist John Maynard Keynes predicted we would be working 15-hour weeks by 2030, with hours in the office reducing over time.
However, a 9 to 5, Monday to Friday shift became the norm and over time it became hard for businesses and workers to think differently.
You can present your boss all the data you want, but it’s unlikely you’re going to have success convincing management that the way to increase productivity and solve the labor shortage is to give everyone Friday off - forever.
