Sink or Swim?

Antarctica, the coldest place on Earth, is too chilly for most humans. It's a different story for penguins, though. Several types of penguins make their home in Antarctica. The birds waddle all over the icy continent.

However, they don't all have "happy feet." Some of Antarctica's penguins are endangered. The animals hunt for food in waters off Antarctica's coasts. They use floating sea ice as a place to rest while they search. In recent years, global warming, the slow rise of Earth's temperature, has been causing the ice to melt.

"Global warming is reducing the amount of food for penguins so that (they) can't find enough to eat," scientist Shaye Wolf claims.

Humans may be responsible for the continent's temperature changes, according to a new study in the journal Nature Geoscience. Temperatures in Antarctica usually do not go above freezing. But lately the weather has been heating up.

People add to global warming when they drive cars or use electricity. That burns fossil fuels, such as coal, oil, and natural gas. The burning of fossil fuels gives off gases that warm Earth.

The harmful gases persist in the atmosphere above Antarctica, researchers say. They found that the west side of the continent is especially affected by global warming.

Scientists are concerned about the possibility that Antarctica's ice may melt more over time. The icy continent is about 5 million square miles. It is covered by glaciers and an ice cap about 7,100 feet thick. An ice cap is a permanent sheet of ice that covers a large area. If the ice melts, that could cause sea levels to rise around the world. Higher sea levels could lead to dangerous flooding in some countries.

Experts are hopeful that conditions in Antarctica can be improved. They say people can reduce global warming by using cars and electricity less often. Even kids can help. Wolf suggests, "Talk to your friends and family about global warming, how it is harming penguins, and how important it is to stop global warming today."

Game On, Brazil

In 2016, athletes from around the world will compete for gold medals in the Summer Olympics. Even though the games are six years away, Brazil's residents already feel like winners.

The nation was recently named to host the historic sporting event. It will be the first Olympics held in South America.

The games will take place in Rio de Janeiro. The city beat out three sites, including Chicago, Illinois, to host the event. When the International Olympic Committee chose Rio de Janeiro, cheering people flooded the city's streets. "This is huge for Rio and for the entire country," says resident Sueli Ferreira.

The Olympics are expected to draw tens of thousands of people. Brazilian officials have already started to prepare for the crowds. "We know what we need to do," explains Brazil's president, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva. "The word . . . is work, work, and work."

Officials want to fix up local sports arenas before Rio de Janeiro steps into the spotlight. They also want to cut down on crime.

They hope hosting the games will improve life in Brazil. About 30 percent of people there live in poverty, or poor conditions. Tourism during the Olympics is expected to create more than 2 million jobs.

"It's going to be good for the economy, good for the people," Ferreira says. "This gives us hope that things will be better here."

Keeping Karzai

KABUL, Afghanistan – It's official: Hamid Karzai is the president of Afghanistan. His victory wasn't an easy one, however. Although the election was held on August 20, Karzai was not formally declared the winner over rival candidate Abdullah Abdullah until November 2.

Election officials received more than 2,000 complaints about voter fraud, including ballot stuffing. After an investigation, more than 1.3 million votes for Karzai were declared invalid, dropping his vote share to 49.7 percent. Abdullah had 50.6 percent of the vote following the investigation.

In order to win the election, a candidate must receive 50 percent of the vote. If no candidate reaches that mark, a runoff is held. To settle the score, a second-round runoff election was scheduled for November 7, but Abdullah pulled out days before, saying the vote could not be free and fair.
Karzai became Afghanistan's first democratically elected president in 2004. (Current Events, 11/16/2009, vol. 109, issue 10.)

 TEXTO 4:
Treating Burns

There are three different kinds of burns: first degree, second degree, and third degree. Each type of burn requires a different type of medical treatment.

The least serious burn is the first-degree burn. This burn causes the skin to turn red but does not cause blistering. A mild sunburn is a good example of a first-degree burn, and, like a mild sunburn, first-degree burns generally do not require medical treatment other than a gentle cooling of the burned skin with ice or cold tap water.

Second-degree burns, on the other hand, do cause blistering of the skin and should be treated immediately. These burns should be immersed in warm water and then wrapped in a sterile dressing or bandage. (Do not apply butter or grease to these burns. Despite the old wives’ tale, butter does not help burns heal and actually increases the chances of infection.) If a second-degree burn covers a large part of the body, then the victim should be taken to the hospital immediately for medical care.

Third-degree burns are those that char the skin and turn it black or burn so deeply that the skin shows white. These burns usually result from direct contact with flames and have a great chance of becoming infected. All third-degree burn victims should receive immediate hospital care. Burns should not be immersed in water, and charred clothing should not be removed from the victim as it may also remove the skin. If possible, a sterile dressing or bandage
should be applied to burns before the victim is transported to the hospital.
