 - COLETIVOS QUE SOMENTE CONCORDA GRAMATICALMENTE COM VERBO NO PLURAL:

NOTA DE EXPLICAÇÃO: THE MILATARY (the military forces of a country) →  Singular or Plural Verb?

The military is usually followed by a singular verb:

 - The military is helping with the relief effort. [Longman Dictionary]

- The military has opposed any cuts in defence spending. [Cambridge Dictionary]

In British English, you can also use a plural verb:

-  The military are helping with the relief effort. [Longman Dictionary]

- AGORA, VAMOS À RESOLUÇÃO DA QUESTÃO:

Mark the correct option.

(A) Many cattle are suffering from a serious disease.

§  CORRETA, o verbo (ARE) faz concordância gramatical adequada com o sujeito no plural (Many cattle):

§  Many cattle (sujeito no plural) → are (Verbo no plural).

§  CATTLE (gado) é PLURAL NOUN (substantivo no plural). [Cambridge Dictionary]

(B) The police is looking for a dark-haired man in his twenties.

§  INCORRETA, o verbo (is) não faz concordância gramatical adequada com o sujeito no plural (The police):

§  SENTENÇA CORREGIDA:

§  The police are looking for a dark-haired man in his twenties.

 §  REMEMBER:

ü POLICE (a polícia, a organização) é PLURAL NOUN (substantivo no plural). [Cambridge Dictionary]

ü The police are investigating fraud allegations against him. [Cambridge Dictionary]

(C) Too many mathematics are usually taught in schools.

§  INCORRETA, porque não se usa MANY com “uncountable noun” como é caso de “mathematics” (a ciência, a Matemática). O outro erro é o verbo no plural (are), o correto seria o verbo no singular (is) para fazer a concordância adequada com o substantivo “mathematics” no singular.

§  NOMES de disciplinas são UNCOUNTABLE NOUNS  → Art, Biology, Chemistry, Economics, Engineering, History, Linguistics, Literature, Mathematics, Music, Physics, Poetry, Psychology,  Science.

§   SENTENÇA CORREGIDA:

§  Too much mathematics is usually taught in schools.

§  REMEMBER:

ü Uncountable Nouns NÃO PODEM ser usadas com MANY, SO MANY, TOO MANY, HOW MANY, A FEW.

ü Uncountable Nouns NÃO PODEM ser usadas com os artigos A, AN.

ü Uncountable Nouns NÃO PODEM ser usadas com numerais: ONE, TWO, etc.

ü Uncountable Nouns PODEM ser usadas com MUCH, MORE, MOST, SO MUCH, TOO MUCH, HOW MUCH.

ü Uncountable Nouns PODEM ser usadas com A LITTLE, LITTLE, LESS.

ü Uncountable Nouns PODEM ser usadas com A LOT OF, LOTS OF, PLENTY OF.

ü Uncountable Nouns PODEM ser usadas com ALL, ALL THE.

ü Uncountable Nouns PODEM ser usadas com SOME, ANY, NO.

ü Uncountable Nouns PODEM ser usadas com THE, THIS, THAT, ENOUGH.

      ü EXEMPLOS:

ü I’ve given you all my love.

ü You can have all the time in the world.

ü There is enough garbage to fill a dumpsite.

ü There is enough fuel to make the trip home.

ü Ask grandma to bake more bread!

ü that bowl of rice.

ü that soup smells delightful.

ü all the information you need.

ü Can someone please help in bringing in the furniture?

ü Can I have some spaghetti?

ü Don’t just load your computer with any software.

ü There’s little food in the country.

(D) Her jeans is too tight at the hips.

§  INCORRETA porque o substantivo “jeans” exige verbo no plural.

 §  SENTENÇA CORREGIDA:

§  Her jeans are too tight at the hips.

 §  REMEMBER:

ü Substantivo com “duas pernas” (Jeans, Pants, Knickers, Shorts) fica no plural, é por isso que exige verbo no plural "are":

(E) Where are those five pounds I lent you? (Onde estão as 5 libras que eu te emprestei?)

§  A sentença "Where are those five pounds I lent you?" apresenta 2 erros gramaticais:

ü TO LEND TO YOU → O verbo "TO LEND" (emprestar ALGO PARA alguém) exige a preposição "to", portanto o correto é "I lent to you".

ü No contexto, estamos falando do total do dinheiro (pound é moeda inglesa), portanto o correto é "where is the five pounds...?"

ü A oração corregida é:

ü "Where is the five pounds I lent to you?"
