The 1906 San Francisco Earthquake
1
The Earth is always changing. Natural disasters are changes which are so great they may cause damage to the shape of the land or to the lives of people and other living things.
2
Great changes happen deep inside the Earth and on its surface.
3
The San Francisco earthquake of 1906 was a major earthquake that struck the city and the coast of northern California at 5:12 a.m. on Wednesday, April 18, 1906. The most widely accepted estimate for the magnitude of the earthquake is as high as 8.3. The mainshock epicenter occurred offshore about 2 miles (3 km) from the city. It ruptured along the San Andreas Fault for a total length of 296 miles (477 km). Shaking was felt from Oregon to Los Angeles. The earthquake and resulting fire would be remembered as one of the worst natural disasters in the history of the United States. The toll from the earthquake and resulting fire represents the greatest loss of life from a natural disaster in California’s history.
4
At the time, only 567 deaths were reported. The figure was invented by government officials who felt that reporting the true death toll would hurt real estate prices and efforts to rebuild the city. Today, this figure has been revised to an estimate of at least 3,000. Most of the deaths occurred in San Francisco and 189 were reported across the San Francisco Bay Area.
5
Between 225,000 and 300,000 people were left homeless out of a population of about 410,000; half of the refugees fled across the bay to Oakland and Berkeley.
6
The earthquake and fire would leave a significant impression on the development of California. At the time of the disaster, San Francisco had been the ninth largest city in the United States and the largest on the West Coast. Over a period of 60 years, the city had become the financial, trade, and cultural center of the West. The overall cost of the damage from the earthquake was estimated at the time to be around $ 400 million.
7
What is worse is that Californians know that another similar earthquake is still to happen soon. They call it “The Big One”. However, they do not think or plan to move to other parts of the U.S., at least not until it does strike the area.

O número foi inventado por funcionários do governo que achavam que relatar o verdadeiro número de mortos prejudicaria os preços imobiliários e os esforços para reconstruir a cidade.
Today, this figure has been revised to an estimate of at least 3,000. Most of the deaths occurred in San Francisco and 189 were reported across the San Francisco Bay Area.
Hoje, esse número foi revisado para uma estimativa de pelo menos 3.000. A maioria das mortes ocorreu em São Francisco e 189 foram relatadas na área da baía de São Francisco.

The overall cost of the damage from the earthquake was estimated at the time to be around $ 400 million.
O custo total dos danos do terremoto foi estimado na época em cerca de US$ 400 milhões.
What is worse is that Californians know that another similar earthquake is still to happen soon.
O pior é que os californianos sabem que outro terremoto semelhante ainda acontecerá em breve.
They call it “The Big One”.
Eles chamam isso de “O Grande”.
However, they do not think or plan to move to other parts of the U.S., at least not until it does strike the area.
No entanto, eles não pensam ou planeiam mudar-se para outras partes dos EUA, pelo menos não até que isso atinja a área.

Smog Beaters
Benjamin Sutherland
1
Smog is a fact of life in most cities, but several Italian municipalities think they’ve found a way to beat it. A new type of sidewalk brick breaks down carbon monoxide, a poisonous byproduct of automobile engines that also contribute to global warming.
2
The bricks are made with a blend of titanium dioxide. When exposed to light, the compound interacts chemically with the carbon monoxide, turning it into water and carbon dioxide – the gas that fizzles up in the soda pop. “I expected it to work, but not so well,” says Rossano Amadelli, who led tests for the Italian National Research Council. “It stunned me.”
3
In September, the cities of Cagliari, Sassari and Selargius plan to begin laying the pollution-eating bricks in their sidewalks and plazas. The bricks cost €19 per square meter, a 46 percent premium over the conventional brick at €13. That’s the price of fresh air.

PROTECTING WILDLIFE: PROJETO TAMAR, A PIONEERING INITIATIVE IN BRAZIL

Projeto Tamar was created to carry out research into the sea turtles that nest on and feed along the Brazilian coast and to protect them. Until the 1970’s, very little had been done to protect these ancient reptiles from the dangers they can encounter on the beaches where they lay their eggs during the reproductive season.

Some of these dangers can be classified as “natural dangers”. A number of birds, for instance, anxiously wait for the eggs to hatch to eat the little turtles on their way to the sea. And there are others that eat the eggs even before they hatch! Some other dangers, however, are the result of human activity which, unfortunately, can sometimes be predatory. Two examples are artificial lighting on beaches and certain types of fishing nets. As explained on the Projeto Tamar homepage (http://www.tamar.org.br/ingles), “artificial lights disrupt the females who come to nest on the beaches and disorient the hatchlings, by attracting them away from their path to the sea.” They also say that sea turtles can accidentally be “captured in fishing nets [...] and, not being able to surface in order to breathe, they become unconscious.” Tamar has helped pass laws that restrict and regulate the installation of additional sources of light in nesting areas and developed educational campaigns to teach fishermen how to revive turtles accidentally caught up in their nets and return them to the sea.

 TEXTO 2As questões de 04 a 09 referem-se ao texto seguinte:
Thinking careers out

As you know, choosing a career can be pretty tough. Who’s never pictured themselves behind a desk, looking cool, delegating power? But, what if after all the struggle you realize you’re not that happy? Would you ask for help? Who would you go to?

Consultant Clara Heinz is used to lending her ear to top business executives all over the world. She holds a doctorate in psychology and helps corporations select top executives. Her experience shows that reaching a high position is no guarantee of stability and confidence. Very often, it’s exactly the opposite. However, a lot of executives are reluctant to ask for help and end up isolating themselves from other employees. And what’s the main reason for this? Fear. BUSINESS IN FOCUS interviewed Ms Heinz and this is what she told us.

BIF: What do top executives fear the most?
Ms Heinz: Well, one very common fear is not having all the answers. Executives are afraid of not having all the necessary abilities to handle their business and are afraid of being fired as a result. Being unemployed is another fear. Yet, these same executives are not always confident enough to open up and express their doubts. Therefore, I’d say that the good executive is the one who considers learning as part of the package.

BIF: How about the fear of changing work or careers?
Ms Heinz: Oh, this is extremely common among these professionals. In general, people feel it’s time to change when they feel they are not learning or doing anything new. People do need new challenges. The risk is when they don’t think they’re ready to face a new phase, though.

BIF: How do these professionals prepare for the transition?
Ms Heinz: They should surround themselves by a kind of ‘council’ of people they trust completely: an ex-boss, a friend, or even an elderly aunt! What’s important is that they should look up to these people and talk to them at least once a year. They should tell them all about their plans and listen to their opinions and advice. Besides, they should also have some plans written down and revise them from time to time. But, first and foremost, they must not be afraid of the change. Ideally, they should build a network and use it to manage contacts and to make connections in such a way that finding a new job shouldn’t take too long. All in all, everything comes down to knowing the right people and being able to trust them. But they shouldn’t forget that if someone scratches their back, they should be willing to scratch theirs in return. After all, the world of ‘It’s all taking and no giving’ is rapidly being substituted by one of greater solidarity and friendship.

BIF:Thank you very much for the interview.
Ms Heinz: My pleasure.

 TEXTO 3As questões de 23 a 28 referem-se ao texto seguinte:
The body is the hero

Those tremendous volumes give us the ability to run, to keep enough oxygen and sugar moving to our legs and arms so that our muscles can move even after hours of continuous effort. But the price we have to pay for all this quickness and power is a severe one. A bacterium from a cut in your finger can reach your brain in a little over four seconds. A pneumococcus in your lungs can reach the bones of arms in three seconds.

With a circulatory system such as we have, we certainly need protection. And it is there: a group of chemical protectors and microbial killers so quick and so powerful that, in spite of our size, our circulatory system, and all our human mistakes, we survive.

This remarkable system of protection is within us. It is provided by the antibodies that patrol our circulation, by the white cells and lymphocytes that guard our tissues, by all the other elements that make up our body’s immune system.

To cure a disease you must help the body to do it itself. The work is done by the body, not by science, not by antibiotics. Antibiotics only buy time. They fight microbes, they retard their growth, they may even kill a few; but in the end it is the body itself that must clean up the battlefield, find and destroy that last resistant microbe.

All the drugs and technical achievements in infectious diseases have done nothing more than help the body’s own immune system. They give us time, the precious time to mount a defense, but nothing more. The body is the hero.
