NAÇÕES UNIDAS, 11 de maio de 2015 (IPS/GIN) - Ao discursar no Conselho de Segurança da ONU, Federica Mogherini, Alta Representante da União Europeia para os Negócios Estrangeiros, apelou à comunidade internacional para que tome medidas urgentes para acabar com a crise no Mediterrâneo e desmantelar as redes de tráfico de seres humanos que a facilitam.
"The EU is united and we will work, but we cannot work alone. We need to share and act together, as it's a EU responsibility and a global responsibility, "said Mogherini.
"A UE está unida e vamos trabalhar, mas não podemos trabalhar sozinhos. Temos de partilhar e atuar em conjunto, uma vez que se trata de uma responsabilidade da UE e de uma responsabilidade global", afirmou Mogherini.
In 2014, 3,300 migrants died while fleeing their countries of origin to enter Europe. Three people out of four perished in the Mediterranean Sea, and 2015 looks set to be even worse, added Mogherini.
Em 2014, 3.300 migrantes morreram quando fugiam dos seus países de origem para entrar na Europa. Três em cada quatro pessoas pereceram no Mar Mediterrâneo, e 2015 parece que vai ser ainda pior, acrescentou Mogherini.
According to the U.N. Refugee Agency (UNHCR) about 60,000 men, women and children have crossed the Mediterranean this year, and 1,800 of them have tragically died during the journey.
De acordo com a Agência das Nações Unidas para os Refugiados (ACNUR), cerca de 60 000 homens, mulheres e crianças atravessaram o Mediterrâneo este ano e 1800 morreram tragicamente durante a viagem.
"Saving lives and preventing the loss of lives at sea is a top responsibility that we all share, not only as Europeans but globally," Mogherini said at the Council briefing, adding that an exceptional situation requires an immediate strategy to solve the crisis.
"Salvar vidas e evitar a perda de vidas no mar é uma responsabilidade fundamental que todos partilhamos, não só como europeus mas a nível global", afirmou Mogherini no briefing do Conselho, acrescentando que uma situação excecional exige uma estratégia imediata para resolver a crise.
The Mediterranean problem is a structural problem rooted in poverty, increasing inequality, conflicts and human rights violations in African and Middle Eastern countries and beyond, including the situation in Syria, Afghanistan and the Horn of Africa, said the European High Representative.

O problema mediterrânico é um problema estrutural que tem origem na pobreza, no aumento das desigualdades, nos conflitos e nas violações dos direitos humanos nos países africanos e do Médio Oriente e não só, incluindo a situação na Síria, no Afeganistão e no Corno de África, afirmou o Alto Representante europeu.

Also speaking at the Council was Antonio Tete, Permanent Representative Observer of the African Union to the U.N., who underlined that smuggling of migrants has emerged due to several factors that lead people in many African countries to escape from abject poverty, climate change, water scarcity, insufficient progress in employment and rising inequality.

António Tete, Representante Permanente Observador da União Africana junto da ONU, sublinhou que o contrabando de migrantes surgiu devido a vários factores que levam as pessoas em muitos países africanos a fugir da pobreza abjecta, das alterações climáticas, da escassez de água, do progresso insuficiente no emprego e do aumento da desigualdade.

“This humanitarian emergency is also a security crisis, since smuggling networks are linked to finance and terrorist activities, which contributes to instability in a region that is already unstable enough,” Mogherini said.
"Esta emergência humanitária é também uma crise de segurança, uma vez que as redes de contrabando estão ligadas a atividades financeiras e terroristas, o que contribui para a instabilidade numa região que já é suficientemente instável", afirmou Mogherini.
If the international community fails to frame its response to the crisis, it will be a "moral failure," said Peter Sutherland, the Special Representative of the Secretary-General for International Migration.

The sere, crumbly atmosphere of a dig, as I envisioned it, seemed a welcome relief from the maelstrom I now perceived to be teeming within the human body. This was in the nineteen-seventies, when archeology was a glamour profession.

I decided to take a year off before starting college and devote myself to salaried excavation in exotic places. I had grown up in San Francisco and had left the United States only for occasional family trips to Mexico. I’m not sure which part of this vision most enthralled me: myself prying human bones and lustrous vessels from the soil of Asia or Africa, or the forgotten lives I pictured humming just _____ that soil, awaiting my discovery.

The exoticism of Kampsville was not the sort I’d craved. The real shock was the square metre of earth – delineated by strings attached to pegs – that was the extent of my archeological domain. Nor were we to dig on our dig, only to skim away fine layers of earth with a scalpel, lowering the surface of our metre over the course of days, until the objects embedded there – projectile points or pottery shards – rested on top.
