OMMITING RELATIVE PRONOUNS - FUNCAB-2009-PM/PIRAÍ/RJ-PROFESSOR – LÍNGUA INGLESA.

Mark the alternative in which the relative pronoun could be left out (omitted):

A) The soldier that talked to me turned out to be my neighbor;
B) The French journalist whom I spoke to told me that the president had died;
C) The president, whose palace was invaded by the army, didn't manage to escape;
D) The presidential palace, which is located in the city center, is a very old building;
E) Nino Vieira, who was the President of Guinea Bissau, has been killed by the military.

DICAS IMPORTANTES:

(1) UM PRONOME RELATIVO NÃO DEVE SER OMITIDO DEPOIS DE VÍRGULA NEM DEPOIS DE PREPOSIÇÃO.
  • Do Exercise 1, which is very easy.
  • My sister, who is 31 years old, got married in July.
  • With whom will you go?
  • The students to whom have talked me aren't here.
(2) UM PRONOME RELATIVO NÃO DEVE SER OMITIDO QUANDO SEGUIDO DE VERBO(verbo comum, modal, to be, etc).
  • I ran into a girl who knew you in college.
  • She’s one of those people who can sleep easily.
  • The waiter who served us yesterday was rude.
  • Last week I met some people who were born in the USA.
(3) UM PRONOME RELATIVO PODE SER OMITIDO QUANDO ANTES DE PRONOME PESSOAL (I, YOU, HE, SHE, IT, WE, THEY) OU FUNCIONANDO COMO CONJUNÇÃO ANTES DE UMA CLAUSE(Oração).
  • There’s an amazing new movie (which) you really ought to see.
  • The book (that) I'm reading is fascinating. 
  • Have you read the letter which I sent you?
  • This is the friend (that) I told you about.
  • I like the clothes (that) she wears.
  • The film (which) we saw yesterday was very interesting.
  • It’s a song (that) my mother taught me.
RESOLUÇÃO RÁPIDA:

Mark the alternative in which the relative pronoun could be left out (omitted):

A) The soldier that talked to me turned out to be my neighbor;
(O soldado que falou comigo era meu vizinho;)
  • NÃO PODE SER OMITIDO porque THAT é seguido de verbo (that talked).
B) The French journalist whom I spoke to told me that the president had died;
(O jornalista francês com quem falei me disse que o presidente havia morrido;)
  • PODE SER OMITIDO porque WHOM é seguido de pronome pessoal (whom I).
  • The French journalist whom I spoke to told me that the president had died; (CORRETO)
  • The French journalist I spoke to told me that the president had died; (CORRETO)
C) The president, whose palace was invaded by the army, didn't manage to escape;
(O presidente, cujo palácio foi invadido pelo exército, não conseguiu escapar;)
  • NÃO PODE SER OMITIDO porque WHOSE  vem depois de vírgula (, whose).
D) The presidential palace, which is located in the city center, is a very old building;
(O palácio presidencial, localizado no centro da cidade, é um edifício muito antigo;)
  • NÃO PODE SER OMITIDO porque WHICH  vem depois de vírgula (, which).
