Before the first Portuguese explorers, led by Pedro Alvares Cabral, arrived in Brazil in 1500, Brazil is thought to have been inhabited by semi-nomadic populations for at 4 least 10,000 years. Over the next three centuries, it was resettled by the Portuguese and exploited mainly for wood (pau-brasil), then sugarcane, coffee beans and gold mining. The colony’s manpower used in these activities was initially composed of enslaved peoples, firstly Amerindians and then, after 1532, mainly Africans.
2
The only recorded transcontinental relocation of a royal family, headed by Queen Maria I of Portugal and her son and regent, the future João VI of Portugal, fled from Napoleon’s armies and relocated to Rio de Janeiro, together with the government and nobility. Although they returned in 1821, the interlude led to the opening of commercial ports to the United Kingdom — at the time isolated from most European ports by Napoleon — and to the elevation of Brazil to the status of a United Kingdom under the Portuguese Crown.

Based on the text, it can be deduced that
1 the presence of the Portuguese royal family in Rio didn’t bring about any particular progress to Brazil.
2 Brazil is believed to have been inhabited by semi-nomadic populations at least for a hundred centuries before the first Portuguese explorers’ arrival.
3 when the Portuguese first arrived in Brazil they found well-settled Indian tribes.
4 the Portuguese royal family was moved to Brazil several times during the XIX century, due to European wars.
5 the colony’s manpower was used to work in agricultural and mining activities.
6 the royal family came to Brazil due to Napoleon’s good relations with England.
(...)
In the text,
7 “exploited” (R.5) is the same as explored.

Having the text just as a reference, judge the following items.
8 São Francisco river, also known as the river of our national unity, has now been revitalized thanks to the recuperation of the marginal forests and to the implementation of systems of sewers in the cities it passes along.
9 During the Brazilian colonization the sugarcane agroindustry was used to supply the internal market.
10 At the beginning of the XIX century, due to pressures from the European politics, the transference of the Portuguese Court to Brazil, in 1808, delayed the process of colony independence as it didn’t eliminate any obstacle to free commerce, while keeping the metropolitan monopoly.

In 2007, Brazil’s annual carnival played host to an unusual type of science communication in the form of samba parades and puppets. Ildeu Moreira, head of the science communication unit at the Ministry of Science and Technology said science themes had been an increasing part of Brazil’s carnival for decades. “Since science has become more and more a part of everyday life for the people, it has also penetrated the universe of popular artists”, said Moreira. This year, the samba-school Rosas de Ouro gave the São Paulo carnival parade a scientific flavour, weaving a story about the evolution of life, from microscopic organisms to space exploration. Religious and scientific beliefs were included in the narrative, which depicted both creationism and the big bang, and drew attention to the destruction of the Amazon rainforest. Metamorphosis was the main theme for the Vila Isabel samba school in Rio de Janeiro. They presented a story with “scientific, historical and cultural content” inspired by the “constant transformations” in our lives, according to the school’s website.

Brazil has found alternatives to oil that are touting as the future of fuel: alcohol and biodiesel. Alcohol, a bio-ethanol fuel 1 made from sugar cane is increasingly powering Brazilian automobiles, and President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva speaks of an energy revolution, led by his country. Biodiesel, a renewable fuel, is seen as a way to make Brazil, and indeed the world, less dependent on oil. The manufacture of alcohol and biodiesel provides jobs for the poverty-stricken interior regions of the country and Lula has high hopes that, if the trend catches on across the globe, Brazil may become a large exporter of biofuels. Others say it is unrealistic to expect European countries, for example, to re-engineer their networks of service stations and build the many plants necessary to make biofuels from sugar and maize. Like the hybrid car, biofuels may be an innovation with a global potential that will never be tapped. For the time being, the world will watch as Brazil embraces the renewable energy source and eagerly attempts to prove both its feasibility and benefits.

A silent revolution is taking place at the Ale Jatinho petrol station on Avenida Brasil, on the outskirts of Rio de Janeiro. “I’ll be honest with you, it doesn’t feel like a revolution”, said the station’s 33-year-old manager. “But nobody’s complained yet.” It is hard to see why they would. Driven by soaring oil prices, petrol already costs 70% more at the pumps than alcohol. And, according to Brazil’s President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, Ale Jatinho represents the front line of a new energy revolution led by Brazil in a world where dwindling oil reserves and growth in emerging economies such as China are making high petrol prices a permanent feature. Fuels such as biodiesel are renewable and can be made from agricultural products, like palm oil or soya beans, which can then be mixed at up to 30% with petroleum-based products such as diesel.

1)tout – to advertise, make known or praise something or someone repeatedly, especially as a way of encouraging their sale, popularity or development.
2)dwindle – to become smaller in size or amount, or fewer in number.
According to the text, it can be concluded that
17 alcohol at the pumps costs 30% less than petrol.
18 the success of Brazilian “energy revolution” lies in petrol exploitation.
19 biodiesel is a renewable source of energy derived from some kind of plantation.
20 biodiesel can be mixed with diesel to power some machines.
21 biofuels can play a considerable role in solving Brazilian two crucial problems.
22 Brazil has become a great exporter of biodiesel to the rest of the world.
23 European countries are making massive investments to adopt Brazilian alternative source of energy.
24 The vast majority of Brazilians would rather have bio-ethanol to move their cars than gasoline.
25 Brazil’s renewable fuel can contribute to slow down the exploitation of oil reserves.

The chart above shows the result of a statistical study about the monthly average expenses on particular items which different families have according to their monthly incomes. The data were gathered through the answers given by a meaningful number of families living in different parts of Brazil.
(...)
Based on the chart, judge the following items.
26 Money spent on taxes by families with a monthly income between 2000 and 3000 is more than twice as much the amount spent by families with a monthly income between 1600 and 2000 on this same type of expense.
27 Families with monthly income superior to 600 and up to 1000 spend on education less than half the amount spent by families with monthly income superior to 1200 and up to 1600 on this same type of expense.
28 The higher the family monthly income is, the more they spend on education.
29 The data given in the chart assures that each of the family surveyed with a monthly income between 600 and 1000 spends R$ 234,26 on food.
