The hour of the star

Clarice Lispector

Clarice Lispector’s last novel is a short, strange, tour de force – a masterpiece of a book. In The hour of the star, Lispector follows the narrator Rodrigo S. M., a pretentious, cosmopolitan writer describing the act of writing. He is writing about his creation, Macabéa, one of “life’s unfortunates”, a woman living in the slums of Rio. She is poor, sickly, and unloved, and yet she lives simply and happily. “Lispector employs her pathetic heroine against her urbane, empty narrator, and working them like a pair of scissors, she cuts away the reader’s preconceived notions about poverty, identity, love, and the art of fiction.”

90% of people quit after 3 months of hitting the gym; here’s how to be the exception

One of the main reasons people give up a sport is because it was not a good match for them. If you hate running, you’re not likely to stick to it for long. Take a look below for three novelty workout ideas and be part of the 10%.

Pound

Pound is a full-body cardio-based class that mimics playing the drums. Armed with two sticks, you “pound” your way through the hour, slamming your arms to the beat alongside other choreography. No music actually plays from the speakers. Instead, the class makes the music. You’ll jump, you’ll dance, and you’ll play – getting stronger all the while! As with any exercise, Pound classes offer exercisers a new option for relieving stress and keeping a bright outlook. If you enjoy high-energy, group fitness classes with rockin’ music, add Pound to your weekly workout.

Aerial Yoga

This practice looks like a cross between a Cirque du Soleil show and gymnastics. But it turns out you don’t need acrobatic moves to reap the benefits of this type of yoga, also called antigravity yoga. In an aerial yoga class, you perform the same poses you do on a yoga mat, except you use a silk hammock that’s suspended from the ceiling as a prop to support you through the various flows. The purpose of the hammock is to help improve flexibility and build strength, while allowing you to do more challenging poses without added pressure on shoulders, spine, or head.

Plogging

A new Scandinavian trend encourages people to pick up litter while out running. So, it’s not just good for your health, it’s also good for the environment. It’s called “plogging” – a portmanteau of jogging and the Swedish plocka upp, meaning ‘pick up’. Plogging combines going for a run with intermittent squatting (to collect rubbish), which actually sounds like a pretty satisfying workout. According to Lifesum, a typical user will burn 288 calories in 30 minutes of plogging, which is more or less the same as what’s burned off while jogging. Ploggers take plastic bags along with them so they can store the collected litter they find along their route.

Waiting for her man to come
And take her by her hand
And take her to this promise land

Some of the most ubiquitous Venezuelan foods are fried corn- or flour-based pancakes, arepas. They can be filled with everything from eggs and tomatoes to shrimp and cheese. Venezuelans snack on them throughout the day, and small arepas are served as side dishes at most meals. Whether dining out or at home, some other common traditional menu items are: cachitos, cachapas and hallaca. Cachitos are hot croissants filled with ham and cheese, whereas cachapas are thick, sweet, maize pancakes served with a mozzarella-type cheese. Hallaca is a dish of chopped beef, pork and chicken mixed with green peppers, onion, garlic, tomatoes, raisins, olives and herbs, typically served at Christmas. Corn dough is wrapped around the mixture and then steamed in banana leaves. Venezuela grows a lot of coffee and has a strong coffee culture, thanks to the introduction of espresso by Spaniards. Coffee is the most common beverage in the country and it is always offered to guests. It’s considered rude to say no if you’re offered a cup of joe because it’s a symbol of hospitality. Other typical drinks are fruit juices, milkshakes and chicha, a beverage made of boiled rice, condensed milk, sugar, vanilla and ice. Chicha is most common in Venezuela’s llanos, or grasslands.

How exercise in old age prevents the immune system from declining

Fergus Walsh
Medical correspondent@BBCFergusWalsh, 8 March 2018

Doing lots of exercise in older age can prevent the immune system from declining and protect people against infections, scientists say.

They followed 125 long-distance cyclists, some now in their 80s, and found they had the immune systems of 20-year-olds.

Prof Norman Lazarus, 82, of King’s College London, who took part in and co-authored the research, said: “If exercise was a pill, everyone would be taking it. It has wide-ranging benefits for the body, the mind, for our muscles and our immune system.” The research was published in the journal Aging Cell.

Prof Janet Lord, director of the Institute of Inflammation and Ageing, at the University of Birmingham, and co-author of the research, said: “The immune system declines by about 2- 3% a year from our 20s, which is why older people are more susceptible to infections, conditions like rheumatoid arthritis and, potentially, cancer. Because the cyclists have the immune system of a 20-year-old rather than a 70- or 80-year-old, it means they have added protection against all these issues.”

The researchers looked at markers in the blood for T-cells, which help the immune system respond to new infections. These are produced in the thymus, a gland in the chest, which normally shrinks in size in adulthood.

They found that the endurance cyclists were producing the same level of T-cells as adults in their 20s, whereas a group of inactive older adults were producing very few.

The researchers believe that being physically active in old age will help people respond better to vaccines, and so be better protected against infections such as flu.

➧ TEXT 2:

A brain training computer game developed by British neuroscientists has been shown to improve the memory of patients in the very earliest stages of dementia and could help such patients avert some symptoms of cognitive decline.

Researchers who developed the “game show”-like app and tested its effects on cognition and motivation in a small trial found that patients who played the game over a period of a month had around a 40 percent improvement in their memory scores.

“We hope to extend these findings in future studies of healthy ageing and mild Alzheimer’s disease,” said George Savulich, who led the study at Cambridge University.

Dementia is a huge global health problem. The World Health Organization says some 47.5 million people had dementia in 2015, and that number is rising rapidly as life expectancy increases and societies age.

The condition is incurable and there are few drugs that can alleviate the symptoms – which include declining memory, thinking, behavior, navigational and spatial skills and the gradual loss of ability to perform everyday tasks.

Publishing his results in the International Journal of Neuropsychopharmacology, Savulich said that as well as improving their memory scores in the game, patients who played it retained more complex visual information than those who didn’t.

Independent experts said the study’s findings were encouraging, but that the app needed be tested against other forms of brain training in trials involving more people.

“While this type of brain training will not ultimately be able to prevent or cure memory diseases like dementia, it is a promising way to improve early memory symptoms of the disease,” said Tara SpiresJones of the University of Edinburgh.

Exercise does more than build muscles and help
prevent heart disease. New science shows that it
also boosts brainpower – and may offer hope
in the battle against Alzheimer´s.

BY MARY CARMICHAEL

The stereotype of the “dumb jock” has never sounded right to Charles Hillman. A jock himself, he plays hockey four times a week, but when he isn’t body-checking his opponents on the ice, he’s giving his mind a comparable workout in his neuroscience and kinesiology lab at the University of Illinois. Nearly every semester in his classroom, he says, students on the women’s cross-country team set the curve on his exams. So recently he started wondering if there was a vital and overlooked link between brawn and brains – if long hours at the gym could somehow build up not just muscles, but minds. With colleagues, he rounded up 259 Illinois third and fifth graders, measured their body mass index and put them through classic PE routines: the “sit-and-reach”, a brisk run and timed pushups and sit-ups. Then he checked their physical abilities against their math and reading scores on a statewide standardized test. Sure enough, on the whole, the kids with the fittest bodies were the ones with the fittest brains, even when factors such as socioeconomic status were taken into account. Sports, Hillman concluded, might indeed be boosting the students’ intellect – and also, as long as he didn’t “take the puck to the head”, his own (…)

Hyper kids? Check their diet

Parents have long observed that some kids go bonkers after eating foods with a lot of artificial ingredients or neon-bright colors. Medical researchers – not to mention the food industry – have been skeptical; there was no proof of this effect, at least nothing like a double-blind, controlled study.

As so often happens, however, the parents turned out to be a step ahead of the pros. A carefully designed study published in the British journal the Lancet shows that a variety of common food dyes and the preservative sodium benzoate – an ingredient in many soft drinks, fruit juices and salad dressings – do cause some kids to become measurably more hyperactive and distractible. The findings prompted Britain’s Food Standards Agency to issue an immediate advisory to parents to limit their children’s intake of additives if they notice an effect on behavior. In the U.S., there hasn’t been a similar response, but doctors say it makes sense for parents to be on the alert.

The study, led by Jim Stevenson, a professor of psychology at England’s University of Southampton, involved about 300 children in two age groups: 3-year-olds and 8- and 9-year-olds. Over three one-week periods, the children were randomly assigned to consume one of three fruit drinks daily: one contained the amount of dye and sodium benzoate typically found in a British child’s diet, a second had a lower concentration of additives, and a third was additive-free. The children spent a week drinking each of the three mixtures, which looked and tasted alike. During each seven-day period, teachers, parents and graduate students (who did not know which drink the kids were getting) used standardized behavior-evaluation tools to size up such qualities as restlessness, lack of concentration, fidgeting and talking or interrupting too much.

Stevenson found that children in both age groups were significantly more hyperactive when drinking the beverage with higher levels of additives. Three-year-olds had a bigger response than the older kids did to the drink with the lower dose of additives, which had about the same amount of food coloring as in two 2- oz. (57 g) bags of candy. But even within each age group, some children responded strongly and others not at all.

Stevenson’s team is looking at how genetic differences may explain the range of sensitivity. One of his colleagues believes that the additives may trigger a release of histamines in sensitive kids. In general, the effects of the chemicals are not so great as to cause full-blown attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Still, the paper warns that “these adverse effects could affect the child’s ability to benefit from the experience of school.”
