The refugee (Performed by U2)

Woah, woah
She’s the refugee
I see your face
I see you staring back at me
Woah, woah She’s the refugee
Her mama say one day she’s gonna
Live in America In the morning
She is waiting
Waiting for the ship to sail
Sail away Woah, woah
Her papa go to war
He’s gonna fight But he don’t know what for
Woah, woah
Her papa go to war
Her mama say one day he’s gonna
Come back from far away
Help me
How can you help me, oh

In the evening
She is waiting
Waiting for her man to come
And take her by her hand
And take her to this promise land
Woah, woah
She’s a pretty face
But at the wrong time In the wrong place
Woah, woah
She’s a pretty face
Her mama say one day she’s gonna
Live in America
Yeah, America
Woah, woah
She’s a refugee
She’s coming back, she’s coming
Keep you company
Woah, woah She’s a refugee
Her mama say one day she’s gonna
Live in America,
yo yo, yo yo, yo yo, yo yo, yo

Some of the most ubiquitous Venezuelan foods are fried corn- or flour-based pancakes, arepas. They can be filled with everything from eggs and tomatoes to shrimp and cheese. Venezuelans snack on them throughout the day, and small arepas are served as side dishes at most meals. Whether dining out or at home, some other common traditional menu items are: cachitos, cachapas and hallaca. Cachitos are hot croissants filled with ham and cheese, whereas cachapas are thick, sweet, maize pancakes served with a mozzarella-type cheese. Hallaca is a dish of chopped beef, pork and chicken mixed with green peppers, onion, garlic, tomatoes, raisins, olives and herbs, typically served at Christmas. Corn dough is wrapped around the mixture and then steamed in banana leaves. Venezuela grows a lot of coffee and has a strong coffee culture, thanks to the introduction of espresso by Spaniards. Coffee is the most common beverage in the country and it is always offered to guests. It’s considered rude to say no if you’re offered a cup of joe because it’s a symbol of hospitality. Other typical drinks are fruit juices, milkshakes and chicha, a beverage made of boiled rice, condensed milk, sugar, vanilla and ice. Chicha is most common in Venezuela’s llanos, or grasslands.

How exercise in old age prevents the immune system from declining

Fergus Walsh
Medical correspondent@BBCFergusWalsh, 8 March 2018

Doing lots of exercise in older age can prevent the immune system from declining and protect people against infections, scientists say.

They followed 125 long-distance cyclists, some now in their 80s, and found they had the immune systems of 20-year-olds.

Prof Norman Lazarus, 82, of King’s College London, who took part in and co-authored the research, said: “If exercise was a pill, everyone would be taking it. It has wide-ranging benefits for the body, the mind, for our muscles and our immune system.” The research was published in the journal Aging Cell.

Prof Janet Lord, director of the Institute of Inflammation and Ageing, at the University of Birmingham, and co-author of the research, said: “The immune system declines by about 2- 3% a year from our 20s, which is why older people are more susceptible to infections, conditions like rheumatoid arthritis and, potentially, cancer. Because the cyclists have the immune system of a 20-year-old rather than a 70- or 80-year-old, it means they have added protection against all these issues.”

The researchers looked at markers in the blood for T-cells, which help the immune system respond to new infections. These are produced in the thymus, a gland in the chest, which normally shrinks in size in adulthood.

They found that the endurance cyclists were producing the same level of T-cells as adults in their 20s, whereas a group of inactive older adults were producing very few.

The researchers believe that being physically active in old age will help people respond better to vaccines, and so be better protected against infections such as flu.

➧ TEXT 2:

A brain training computer game developed by British neuroscientists has been shown to improve the memory of patients in the very earliest stages of dementia and could help such patients avert some symptoms of cognitive decline.

Researchers who developed the “game show”-like app and tested its effects on cognition and motivation in a small trial found that patients who played the game over a period of a month had around a 40 percent improvement in their memory scores.

“We hope to extend these findings in future studies of healthy ageing and mild Alzheimer’s disease,” said George Savulich, who led the study at Cambridge University.

Dementia is a huge global health problem. The World Health Organization says some 47.5 million people had dementia in 2015, and that number is rising rapidly as life expectancy increases and societies age.

The condition is incurable and there are few drugs that can alleviate the symptoms – which include declining memory, thinking, behavior, navigational and spatial skills and the gradual loss of ability to perform everyday tasks.

Publishing his results in the International Journal of Neuropsychopharmacology, Savulich said that as well as improving their memory scores in the game, patients who played it retained more complex visual information than those who didn’t.

Independent experts said the study’s findings were encouraging, but that the app needed be tested against other forms of brain training in trials involving more people.

“While this type of brain training will not ultimately be able to prevent or cure memory diseases like dementia, it is a promising way to improve early memory symptoms of the disease,” said Tara SpiresJones of the University of Edinburgh.

Civil rights icon Rosa Parks dies at 92

Rosa Louise McCauley Parks, the civil rights icon, resident of Detroit, died on October 24, 2005 at the age of 92, at about 7:00 p.m. EDT, in her apartment on the east side. She had been diagnosed with progressive dementia in 2004.

Rosa Parks was an African American seamstress and a civil rights activist whom the U.S. Congress dubbed the "mother of the modern-day Civil Rights Movement".

Parks is famous for her refusal on December 1, 1955 to obey a bus driver's demand that she give up her seat to a white passenger. Her subsequent arrest and trial for this act of civil disobedience ignited the 381-day Montgomery Bus Boycott by blacks, one of the largest and most successful mass movements against racial segregation in history, and launched Martin Luther King, Jr., one of the organizers of the boycott, to the forefront of the civil rights movement. Her role in American history earned her an iconic status in American culture, and her actions have left an enduring legacy for civil rights movements worldwide.

On Wednesday, November 2 after the funeral service ended, an honor guard from the Michigan National Guard laid the U.S. flag over the casket and carried it to a horse-drawn hearse and later transferred it to a motor hearse. As the hearse passed the thousands of people who had turned out to view the procession, many clapped and released white balloons.

Rosa was interred between her husband and mother at Detroit's Woodlawn Cemetery in the chapel's mausoleum which was renamed the Rosa L. Parks Freedom Chapel just after her death. City officials in Montgomery and Detroit announced on October 27 that the front seats of their city buses would be reserved with black ribbons in honor of Parks until her funeral. Parks had previously prepared and placed a headstone on the selected location with the inscription "Rosa L. Parks, wife, 1913–".

Being a mother or father – a constant learning process
We don't need to go to school to learn to be good mothers and fathers.

The other day I saw an article that caught my attention: the headline was 'School in France teaches how to be a father and mother'. Because of my personal situation - I am a first-time mother of a one-year-old baby - I rushed to read the article about the French experience. The School for Parents and Educators (EPE in French), a non-governmental organization offers activities and services that help train mothers and fathers throughout France. The project seems to be very interesting and the numbers confirm its success: in 1998 the EPE recorded 51,000 visits made by parents. The comments made by mothers and fathers are encouraging: they talk about how good it feels to share the same experiences, and the same joys and heartaches with fellow parents.

How to be a good enough mother or father for our children is a topic that is high on everyone's agenda, more so today than ever before. Theories on modern psychology and education abound and have been widely disseminated. Parents devour information about how to raise their children with the same voracity of a hungry baby nursing at his mother's breast. But often they read so much and listen to so many diverse and diverging opinions that they end up with a theoretical overdose. An excess of information often distracts parents from their most precious gift: that of simply observing their own children. This, more than any theory, provides parents with that "sixth sense" that enables them automatically and naturally to "figure out" what the child needs.

We must remember that intuition should go hand in hand with common sense, which comes from the loving and caring observation of the everyday lives of children and youngsters. Any studies that have been done about their universe will confirm this. Readings, conversations with friends, support groups and the help of experienced professionals are always welcome, as long as the participants are caring and loving parents.

We do not need to go to school to learn how to be mothers and fathers. We should, however, do everything in our power to ensure that we are truly doing the best we can. But without all that guilt or neurosis. After all, education goes both ways: we will teach them about life and they will teach us. Parents can learn so much from their children, including how to be decent parents - and vice versa.

STROKE: Remember the 1st three letters…

February 01, 2006

STROKE IDENTIFICATION:

During a barbecue at the home of friends, a lady stumbled and took a little fall1 – she assured everyone that she was fine and had just2 tripped over a brick because of3 her new shoes. Her friends got her4 cleaned up and got her a new plate of food – while she appeared a bit shaken up, Ingrid went about enjoying herself5 the rest of the afternoon.

Later in the day, after she had gone home, Ingrid's husband called her friends informing them that his6 wife had been taken to the hospital. At 6:00pm, Ingrid passed away -- It was discovered that she had suffered a stroke during lunch. Had they7 known how to identify the signs of a stroke, perhaps she would be with us today.

However, many people who suffer strokes don't die. They8 end up in a helpless, hopeless condition instead. It only takes a minute to read this and save somebody9 ’s life.

A neurologist says that if he can get to a stroke victim within 3 hours he can totally reverse the effects of a stroke ... totally! He10 said the trick was getting a stroke recognized, diagnosed, and then getting the patient medically cared for within 3 hours.

RECOGNIZING A STROKE

Just remember the first three letters of the word STRoke. Read and Learn!

Sometimes symptoms of a stroke are difficult to identify. Unfortunately, the lack of awareness spells disaster. The stroke victim may11 suffer severe brain damage when people nearby fail to recognize the symptoms of a stroke.

Doctors say a bystander can recognize a stroke by asking three simple questions:
S *Ask the individual12 to SMILE.
T *Ask the person13 to TALK, to SAY A SIMPLE SENTENCE, Coherently (i.e... It is sunny today).
R *Ask him14 or her15 to RAISE BOTH ARMS.

NOTE: Another way to recognize a stroke is by asking the person to stick his or her tongue out straight... if the tongue is 'crooked', if it goes to one side or the other - that is also an indication of a stroke.

If he or she has trouble with any one16 of these tasks, call 9-1-1 immediately and describe the symptoms to the dispatcher.
